NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK: CREATING THE NEXT GENERATION OF HOSPITALITY SUPERSTARS

At Village, we believe a career in hospitality is one of the best there is – especially with us. But we also recognise that getting into the hospitality industry isn’t always that simple.

To help overcome this, we’re proud to offer a comprehensive apprenticeship scheme working alongside COPA and HIT. We provide several opportunities for individuals to take their first steps into the industry. Today, we have more than 40 apprentices in a variety of roles – from personal trainers in our Health and Wellness Clubs and production chefs in our kitchens to front-of-house managers in the Pub & Grill and our hotel receptions. We provide our apprentices with the opportunity to learn while they earn, gaining recognised qualifications, and enhancing their skills and industry experience.

By doing this, we’re strengthening our commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive culture that empowers the next generation of hospitality superstars, which is a key element of Village Green – our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy.

Chris Ellis, Business Development Manager at COPA says. “In August last year, COPA launched a new partnership with Village Hotels. Since then, we have collaborated closely with the Senior Leadership Team, General Managers, and Leisure Club Managers to identify skills gaps and opportunities for supporting the Village Hotels. Our primary goal at COPA is to deliver high-quality, bespoke training and Apprenticeships to support staff in their learning journey at Village Hotels. There has been significant interest in our apprenticeship programs, which are facilitated by expert tutors and mentors. All our courses empower learners, enriching their skills on-site and cultivating positive learning experiences, whether in fitness or management."

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) takes place between 5th - 11th February 2024 and is an opportunity for us to celebrate the success stories from some of our Village Apprentices and hear about the positive impact the apprenticeship programme is having on their career development.

Meet some of our current apprentices!

Joe Parkhouse, Operations Team Leader (Leisure Duty Manager)

“I wanted to start my apprenticeship to test myself and achieve my longer-term goal of entering Leisure Club Management. I felt it was a good opportunity to learn alongside my work and progress naturally in my current role. So far, my apprenticeship has presented several opportunities for me to develop, which I am enjoying, as well as a greater sense of achievement in my work and additional responsibilities. I have developed new skills in leadership by focusing more on a new role and working closer with management, as well as communication skills to effectively resolve issues with members and equipment in the club. I believe my apprenticeship should support my career by providing me with a strong foundation of knowledge, a good support structure, and a qualification in management. I am predicted to finish my apprenticeship in March of 2025 and will then look to move up into an operational management role.”

Jade Cooke, Pub and Grill Assistant Manager (Level 3 Hospitality Management)

“I have worked at Village for most of my career, working my way up in the Pub and Grill to become Assistant Manager. I started my apprenticeship in November 2023 as I wanted to help my team and assist my manager as much as possible with the day to-day running of the department while learning more about management. I felt this was the perfect opportunity to learn more skills and expand my knowledge about hospitality while doing the job I love; with the support of the people I know around me. The apprenticeship has taken me back to basics and opened my eyes to a more in-depth world of hospitality, making me not only think about how my role can have an impact on a customer’s experience but also how I can influence my team and lead by example to achieve targets and support them. I am due to do my final assessment in February 2025 and will then look at other roles with Village that leverage the knowledge I gained in the apprenticeship.”

George Turner, Operations Manager (Leisure Duty Manager)

“I started the apprenticeship in 2023 to expand my knowledge and help me progress in my future career at Village. The skills I’m learning are helping me in my job role and I now know how to approach different situations and what leadership style to adopt. I believe my apprenticeship will support my career journey and future success by providing me with the knowledge and skills needed to become a Leisure Club Manager, which is the next step in my career once I finish my apprenticeship in December 2024.”

Max Malone, Pool Responder (Personal Training)

“I am keen to become a Personal Trainer within the Leisure team and the apprenticeship was a great opportunity to learn while working with Village. I’m most enjoying learning about anatomy and physiology, different training methods, and the impact it can create. I believe the apprenticeship is providing skills that are making me more confident about teaching people in the future while providing opportunities to fulfil my future aspirations. Overall, I am feeling good about being involved in the apprenticeship programme, which is due to finish in March 2025 and will enable me to take the next steps into Personal Training.”

Interested in an apprenticeship? We have a wide range of programmes available for existing team members at Village. Employees must be contracted to a minimum of 30 hours per week and will be required to complete six hours of paid ‘off shift’ weekly training to be eligible.
