AVOID FOSO AND HAVE A RELAXING BREAK AWAY

We’ve all heard of FOMO (fear of missing out), right? …But who’s heard of FOSO - the fear of switching off?

It can be hard enough finding the time to get a break away, but even harder to switch off when you get there. We caught up with psychologist Dr Becky Spelman, founder of Private Therapy Clinic to find out her top tips for switching off on your next weekend getaway.

Here’s her top tips on having a truly relaxing break away.

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead will ensure that you make the most of your getaway. Book your accommodation and travel in advance. Check out the weather forecast so you can pack appropriately and prioritise the essentials. Check out all of the fun things to do nearby and make an itinerary, so you don’t miss out! Don’t overthink We’ve all overthought when planning a getaway - packing the car with everything but the kitchen sink, cramming too much into the itinerary or not planning activities in advance… This only adds to our stress whilst away! Avoid overthinking, pack strategically and set realistic expectations to keep stress levels at bay!

Be prepared

Nobody wants to be rushing around the night before a fun trip. Make sure you’re prepared in advance - pack your suitcase, book your travel and accommodation and have your travel documents ready. Don’t forget to research your destination and pre-book any must-see activities. You might be eager to cram in as much as possible, but be realistic on how much you can fit in, and make sure you allow for some down-time.

Spark Joy

What better way to take your mind off the day to day than by doing something you really enjoy! Whether that is heading into nature, reading your favourite book, experiencing culture or combating stress through guided meditation or mindfulness activities. Make time for the things you enjoy, switch off your phone and be as present in the moment as possible.

Go stress-free

Forget FOSO…it’s time to switch off! Head into nature, tuck into a nutritious meal, explore history and culture, relax and read a book or practice mindfulness. Disconnect yourself from technology and ensure you’re fully present!

Get packing

A stress-free trip starts with a well packed suitcase. Start by writing a list of your essentials, as we mentioned, think about the weather and your itinerary so that you can pack strategically. Consider using packing cubes, toiletry bags or electronics organisers to organise your case, so you’ll have everything you need at hand.

Boost your mood

Doing something fun is the perfect stress reliever. Plan something fun to do, check out what’s nearby, socialise with friends and family or get stuck into a new activity. Having fun, whether that’s by singing, dancing, playing games or socialising really helps to take our minds off things, giving you that mood boost that you might need!
